September 2004 Our church, along with many others in the United Church of Christ, are focusing on living our faith in the upcoming elections in November. Many more religious organizations across the nation are discussing the issues being addressed in the elections than ever before. While we are familiar with the Christian Coalition, now we see the United Church of Christ, the National Council of Churches the Interfaith Alliance and Sojourners producing information on what our faith says about the major issues in our country. In 2004, our church had a three pronged approach to this effort:
There is a lot of tension around discussing politics in church. Some believe that words about the issues are not appropriate from the pulpit. Our church has a history of confronting social justice issues and speaking our minds about what is going on in the world. There are laws about what nonprofit organizations, such as churches, can discuss. Here are some examples:
