Stories from Katrina’s Post and Current New Orleans - Debra Joseph

Debra Joseph road out other hurricanes by staying in her New Orleans home, but she knew Katrina was different when the water came up through the front door. “Stories from the Flood,” a presentation about both her struggles during the flood and her ongoing struggles was held on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006.

Debra Joseph couldn’t evacuate New Orleans because her mother was in a wheelchair. But after the floodwaters invaded her home they were forced to leave and survived the hurricane tied to a boat that was lashed to a expressway underpass. Fourteen months later, Joseph and her family are still struggling to survive. This United Church of Christ laywoman is traveling the country telling her story in order to alert others to the continuing struggle of people on the Gulf Coast.
