Greg was born on June 13, 1948. He grew up in Missouri and Montana and received his Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Colorado. He then went on to Chicago Theological Seminary to earn his Master of Divinity degree. Greg later earned his Doctor of Ministry at Bethany Theological Seminary, focusing on conflict resolution and social justice ministry. He has also completed continuing education in two areas- "Consulting with Severely Conflicted Churches" and interim ministry.

Ordained in 1975, Greg served several months in two "black" churches in South Africa over the course of an 18-month stay there. He worked on the staff of Bread for the World for a year, and later helped to establish and then was executive director for five years of the Justice and Peace Network of the Illinois Conference of the UCC. He has served as an associate pastor for a total of 14 years at three churches in Illinois and now feels challenged and called to serve as a solo pastor.

During the search process, Greg's references listed him as being especially strong in the areas of: preaching/speaking; helping people to develop their spiritual lives; helping people to understand and act upon issues of social justice; being an effective teacher; having a strong commitment to the educational ministry of the church; and being a person of faith. During his tenure at Union UCC in Hinsdale, Greg supervised the Christian Education program, including four full time staff members and a preschool program. He also shared pastoral and preaching responsibilities with the three other clergy on staff there. He has taught Sunday school for all ages as well as adult education classes, led numerous retreats, and instigated new programs at Union such as support groups for men and a five year program of speakers and projects dealing with issues of social justice.

While Greg should be the one to discuss his theological and practical understanding of ministry, it is worthwhile to note at this time that one of his special interests is the "ministry of the church as a demonstration of a new community that is possible in God's Spirit". Ways in which the church demonstrates such a community include the Eucharist as people come together at God's table, and in compassionate dealings with each other and the world.

Greg's other interests include playing guitar and singing folk music, reading, bicycling, and Tai Chi. His community activities have included participating in a community anti-gang program, volunteering in a soup kitchen, assisting in children's school programs, and being a leader in the Scout program. He also has a special interest in the relationship between medical science and religion.

We hope you will get to know Greg and his family better, and understand the opportunities his ministry here offers to all of us.
