March 2012 We the people: Loving our Neighbors in an Era of Economic and Political Polarization
Laura Dean Fredrick from Protestants for the Common Good and Ryan Wallace, an intern from McCormick Theological Seminary, will speak with us about economic justice and the role of government from a faith perspective. They discussed: 1) the trend in economic inequality, the effect of wealth on power, the role of government (and what should be left to the private sector) and Political and Economic polarization. Fall 2011 Mythology and the Soul
Phil Hockberger, PhD facilitated a course exploring the relationship between mythology, the unconscious mind, and the soul through the work of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell. The 12 session series addressed different aspects the these two scholars and their work.
April 2011 GLBTQ Justice Issues
This class focused on justice issues which directly affect gay and lesbian people and their families. We explored the issues, gleaned guidance from the bible, shared resources and identified ways in which we can all, straight or gay, take action to eradicate injustice.
March 2011 Celtic Christianity
What is Celtic Christianity? Our four presenters come to this interesting topic from different angles.
- Rev. Jonathan Knight will provided a broad overview of the Spirituality of Celtic Christianity, a short history of the Celts, links to the environment and a discussion of the tenants of the faith.
- Diane Herr shared important aspects of the lives and legends of Sts. Brigid and Patrick. She also discussed Celtic Christian music and art.
- Rev. Greg Skiba talked about the Holy Islands of the Celts, Iona and Lindisfarne, describing their importance in Celtic Christianity. He also talked about their history, founders (Columba and Saint Aidan) and the modern focus of these communities.
- Rev. Mark Winters focused on the sociopolitical conflict in the Northern part of Ireland, including the various symbols and stories from ancient Irish history that both sides utilize to identify their cause.
Fall 2010 Immigration
Immigration issues have bubbled up to the top of public discourse with many opinions about the issues and their resolutions. This series was intended to help us explore and discuss various data and perspectives such as:
- Who is Migrating?
- What is Comprehensive Immigration Reform?
- Which Bible passages shed light on these issues?
- Where can I find answers to my questions?
- How should we view these issues through a Christian lens?
- How can I/we take Action?
