Bubble will envelop local church with song

Traveling musician shares message, hope for peace
Naperville Sun

July 31, 2007

What would a more peaceful world look like?

Jerry Leggett has asked thousands of people that question during his travels across the country on his "Sing Out for Peace at Noon" tour. The singer/songwriter has driven more than 25,000 miles since he set out from Phoenix, Ariz., in January in a bright yellow RV trailer he calls the "Peace Bubble."

Naperville will have its chance to sing out for peace Wednesday when Leggett and his peace bubble visit the First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Leggett delivers his peace philosophy in a unique combination of song, prayer, technology and aluminum. At each noon-time performance, Leggett asks the crowd to ponder a different, strife-free world, and has compiled many of the filmed responses into a series YouTube videos that have received more than 30,000 views so far. From atop his RV, he performs original material from his album, "You Make Strong," as well as pacifist classics from The Beatles and Bob Dylan.

First Congregational invited Leggett in celebration of the United Church of Christ denomination's 50th anniversary. United churches throughout the country have pledged to help Leggett visit 100 churches by the end of the year.

In the spirit of Leggett's tour, which he describes as "a nonsectarian, nonpartisan effort to celebrate the ideals that make for peace in the heart and peace in the world," the Naperville concert is free and open to all.

"This is totally open to the entire community," said Susan Greenwood, who manages publicity for first Congregational. "Peace is something that everybody wants."
